Overview

A regional transportation strategy requires regional input. From 2018 – 2022, Kirk & Co. supported TransLink in planning and implementing its largest-ever public engagement strategy to help shape Transport 2050. This included a three-phase public engagement process, support to local government engagement, planning and facilitating meetings with stakeholder and resident groups and the public, and developing consultation materials and summary reports.

Key considerations in delivering a successful process included simplifying complex transportation planning topics and data for a public audience as well as more informed stakeholders, and providing a wide range of engagement opportunities to encourage strong public participation, including engagement pop-ups at busy public events, targeted stakeholder meetings, local government liaison and online opportunities.

Background

Transport 2050 is Metro Vancouver’s 30-year transportation strategy. Adopted by the Mayors’ Council and TransLink’s Board in January 2022, Transport 2050 identifies over 100 actions to deliver transportation choice for people who live, work, and play in Metro Vancouver. As a shared strategy for the region—with actions for all levels of government—Transport 2050 covers all modes of transportation.
